Presbyopia is “a progressively diminishing ability of the eye to focus, noticeable from middle to old age, caused by loss of elasticity of the crystalline lens” (dictionary.com). Most people start seeing symptoms in their early to mid forties, with their near vision becoming blurred. It’s because of this blurriness that causes so many of us to turn to reading glasses. I found this article by Judith Lee and Gretchyn Bailey that further explains what this inescapable annoyance does to our eyes…and sanity, for that matter!
The article outlines the cause of presbyopia, signs and treatments. Our favorite, of course, being a pair (or a couple pair, since we can’t ever remember where we put ‘em!) of stylish readers.

Glasses Care

When spending between $15 and $40 for a pair of reading glasses, the least you can do is take great care of them. These simple tips, from Health Touch Online (provided by the American Optometric Association), will ensure a long, sturdy life for your precious readers.
1) Clean the lenses using warm water and mild soap or detergent to remove oils and dirt from the lenses. An eyeglass cleaner is also OK. Dry with a soft, clean cloth.
2) Never wipe plastic lenses when dry.
3) Wash the frames occasionally with soap and warm water.
4) When not wearing your glasses, keep them in their case. Never lay them with the lenses down, as this can cause scratching.
5) Avoid letting other people put on your glasses. This could disturb the alignment.
6) If you have trouble seeing even with clean, aligned glasses, you may need a prescription change or have an eye health problem in need of your optometrist’s attention.

Aging eyes and failing eye health are inevitable. However, this article by Lence for findthetop.com has some really great guidelines to help us keep our peepers young and bright for as long as possible.
Here are a few:
-Have your eyes checked every 6 or 12 months
-Wear sunglasses with UV protection-our reading sunglasses offer 100% protection from harmful UV rays.
-Eat foods rich in vitamins A, C & E-carrots, spinach, etc.
-Don’t read in the dark
-Rest your eyes!-catch at least 8 hrs. of sleep a night!
-Quit Smoking
