Reading Glasses…not just for reading anymore.

Anyone have a cellphone camera or digital camera that isn’t focusing  like it should? I ran across this crazy DIY site that found that the lenses in reading glasses can act as an impromptu camera lens and help your camera focus. Check out the image below:

Obviously getting your camera fixed professionally would be the best course of action for long-term use, but if you’re in a pinch see what a reading lens can do for you.

Below is a picture with no reading glass lens:

Thought this was a timely article in case any cameras go haywire over the holidays!

Peepers are hot…literally

Boy did we have some excitement yesterday at the Peepers Reading Glasses office! Our neighbor’s business (which is literally 30 ft from our offices and warehouses) caught on fire! Below is a picture:

Needless to say our Peepers staff was standing ready with fire extinguishers and a garden hose :)  so if we didn’t take any calls or answered emails about our reading glasses we were a bit busy from 1-3 pm CST trying to stave off the flames. Thankfully our local fire departments did a great  job in arriving so quickly and contained the fire within a few hours.  No one was hurt and we’re back at work today!  We’ve got a lot to be thankful for as turkey day approaches! Thank you for your continued support!

Reading glasses are safe for your eyes, don’t worry!

I’ve been coming across more and more articles about off the rack reading glasses and the possibility of damaging  eyes. Peepers has always recommended getting an eye exam to address any vision concerns you may have and to get a definitive answer on what your vision needs may be.  However, once you have gone through a vision check and simply need reading glasses to address the condition of Presbyopia (the condition where you need arm extenders to read anything) getting the right strength is about the only thing you need to worry about. I ran across a great response by Harvard Medical School in response to Are reading glasses bad for your eyes?.

Their answer below:

On One Hand: Nothing To Worry About

Reading glasses won’t hurt you. If you need them to read, then you should wear them, according to the Harvard Medical School. The school maintains that using reading glasses won’t worsen your vision or lead to any eye disease.

On the Other: Get The Proper Glasses

Your reading glasses could contribute to eyestrain or tired eyes if they are not the proper strength for you.

Bottom Line

You can feel free to wear your reading glasses as much as you like. In fact, experts at Harvard maintain that attempting to read without needed reading glasses will simply strain your eyes and tire them out. Just make sure that the reading glasses you select are right for you.

What strength of reading glasses do I need?

If you’re new to reading glasses or in between strengths choosing the right power can be troublesome.  It’s very important to find the right strength of readers to prevent eye strain. If the reading glasses are too weak you have to hold the reading material far away, and too strong if you have to hold it uncomfortably close to your face. Click here for a handy eye chart that you will have to print out to use correctly.

How to use the eye chart.  Hold printed chart at your normal reading distance and WITHOUT your glasses, read each line from top to bottom. The first line where you can no longer clearly read the text will have a suggested magnification strength indicated. This is the suggested strength that should work for you. Your eyecare professional should always be consulted on a regular basis when vision problems occur. You should also have an annual vision checkup if you are over 40 to check for glaucoma. For more information on glaucoma please click here.

Hope this helps!

How to donate your old reading glasses to worthy communities in need.

1) Call (800) CLEANUP for a list of drop-off centers for your old eyeglasses and reading glasses. These centers are affiliated with a program called Give the Gift of Sight, which is sponsored by the Lions Club and LensCrafters.

2) Check with your local Lions Club or LensCrafters for more information about the Gift of Sight program.

How are reading glasses made?

Ever wonder about the science behind how reading glasses and for that matter all eyeglasses are made? I’m an avid listener to all things NPR and just happened to be listening to Science Friday with Ira Flatow awhile back and just found the transcript. Very informative and educational.

Below is a link to the entire transcript for your reading pleasure.

PEEPERS GIVEAWAY WINNER! – EVE MARIE ROSS

We’d like to congratulate our first Peepers/Advanced Style Giveaway winner Eve Marie Ross!  We’d also like to thank everyone who participated, we thoroughly enjoyed all the entries! We think you’ll enjoy Eve’s story about her reading glasses as well as her sense of style.

Eve’s entry is below:

I am 43 years old, and I know, you’re moaning and thinking I’m not old enough for this, but I am an old soul and almost all of my friends and those I seem to meet and befriend out in the world, are all over 60.  I once belonged to an artists book group and used to joke that I was the only one under 70.  I’ve never fit in with people my own age.  They are clueless.  I LOVE my age and wouldn’t go back to being 20 for anything in the world.  I’ve never been ashamed to tell people my age.  I love the wisdom and balance I’ve been able to achieve with age and I hope it only gets better!

I have *always* had 20/20 vision…until very recently.  About 6 months ago I realized I couldn’t see my food once it was a certain distance from my face and I realized I had to say good bye to my 20/20….and hello to my new reading glasses!  I love them because I feel like I’m wearing candy canes and they are so *me*.
