Not sure which reading glasses you’d like to wear…let your dog choose.

Apparently dogs need reading glasses too! They can also help you choose which ones they think you should consider.

While I was cruising the web trying to find new and informative tips and tricks about reading glasses I came across the video below:

Choosing Reading Glasses

You can learn how to train your dog to help you out as well as see how they look on your favorite pet! The video starts getting really funny around time mark 3:05 so if you just want to see how a dog looks in glasses go to that point of the video. Hope you find this as hilarious as I did!

Happy Wednesday!

Prevent Blindness America Issues Call-to-Action to Make UV Eye Protection a National Health Priority

Ran across this press release about  the lack of awareness on how UV rays can seriously damage our vision. 1 in 6 americans plan on wearing sunglasses when they know they’ll be out in the sun for long periods of time. Highlights of the press relase are below:

The congressional briefing, held today, included presentations by several eye doctors, researchers and government representatives on the detrimental and largely preventable impact of UV on eye health, and the importance of wearing eyewear such as sunglasses and photochromic lenses that block 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays to reduce exposure.  Presenters also explained that the groups at highest risk for UV-related eye disease are often the least aware of the need for protection.  High-risk groups include Hispanic Americans, African Americans, and Asian Americans, as well as women, older Americans (consider reading sunglasses) and children.  In addition, several of the presentations provided insights into the financial impact of UV-related eye disease on individuals, employers and the nation as a whole. Specific action urged by lawmakers includes:

  • Inclusion of UV eye protection messages in current and future government-funded education programs on related topics, such as eye- and overall- health or sun protection;
  • Research on the impact of UV on the eye as a topic of consideration for future government-funded efforts; and
  • Heightened awareness of role of vision wear in enhancing eye health and safety, as well as overall quality of life and productivity.

Off the rack reading glasses, are they really safe?

I ran across a video on the web discussing the safety of off the rack reading glasses. In particular the question was,

“I’m blind as a bat, but would those cheap off the rack reading glasses you see at the drug store help me out at all? Worse yet, will they destroy what vision I have left?”

The answer is no! However some reading glasses are better than others in terms of quality. Peepers are a bit more expensive than the pairs you would find at Walgreens and Walmart, but you are getting more bang for your buck in quality and design.

You don’t have to eat just carrots to keep your peepers bright and healthy!

There are loads of foods and supplements that can keep your eyes in tip top shape and even help improve vision…hopefully staving off the need for reading glasses for a bit :) Below is a list of beneficial foods and why they can help :

Eggs
Whether it is just boiled or scrambled, egg inclusion in your diet is valuable for your eyes. The yolk contains several essential nutrients and proteins that keep you healthy. Apart from this, it contains lutein, essential fatty acids, B-vitamins and zinc that are requisites of maintaining the overall health of your eyes.

Bilberries
It does not matter whether you enjoy it fresh or in the form of jam or jelly, but bilberry consumption is a must for people who want to avoid the risk of vision loss. These dark purple berries contain anthocyanosides, a compound that may reduce chances of poor vision. Antioxidant-rich berries are another valuable source of nutrition that may also improve your eyesight.

Dark Chocolate
If you were of the opinion that only bland eatables help improve eyesight, you are in for a surprise. Eyesight can be improved by including dark chocolate in your regular diet. The rich sulfur content in garlic makes it an ideal food that improves eyesight. The high amounts of sulfur help in making the lens strong and resilient. The best part about garlic is that it makes dishes flavorful and healthy.

Survey Sees Gender Differences in Vision IQ

The loss of good vision over time leads women to worry about being unable to read (maybe that’s why the majority of our reading glasses customers are women), while men fear being unable to see the people they love.  Both sexes, however, agree on one thing: Their biggest vision concern is that bad eyesight could render them unable to live independently.
